Hatha yoga is the most popular form of yoga in the West world. It focuses mainly on perfecting the physical body and through the body it influences our emotional and mental awareness. It employs 84 postures (asanas),24 mudras (energy seals) and 3 maha mudras along with breath control (pranayama).

Hatha yoga requires many years of practice along with the teacher so that the student can reach perfection and emphasizes on flexibility and body and mind patience.

Its purpose is to awaken our awareness. It is a technology that brings together prana (connecting breath & the inflow of vital energy into the body) with apana (the ability to expel from the body), lunar (feminine) and solar (masculine) power to awaken awareness through the central energy channel (sushmana) with the intention of awakening the kundalini.

YOGI BHAJAN describes Hatha yoga as "a science in which the energy of the sun and moon are united directly so as to raise the kundalini".
